Before the Surgery

Before your child's scheduled surgery, a nurse or physician will contact you by phone to ask you about your child's basic medical history and to answer your questions. Please Note:

  • It is important that your child does not eat solid food or drink formula 6 hours prior to the scheduled procedure. If your child has eaten within 6 hours of the procedure, it will be necessary to reschedule.
  • Your child may drink clear liquids (juice is fine, but no milk) up to two hours prior to the scheduled procedure.
  • Talk to the nurse about any medications your child takes daily.
  • Please notify your doctor if there is any change in your child's physical condition in the week prior to the procedure.
  • If your child is exposed to chickenpox within 3 weeks prior to the procedure, please call the Texas Pediatric Surgery Center.
  • If your child wears glasses, please bring them in a case for safe keeping.

Anesthesia for Children

After all of your questions have been answered by our pediatric anesthesiologist, you will be asked to sign a consent for anesthesia. While there are many ways to provide sedation, choosing the right method will depend on your child.
